COLOR CUES-MAKE WAY FOR CHOCOLATE

CHOOSING COLORS

RULE NO. 1: THERE ARE NO RULES
Colors are more adaptable than you might think and they don't just disappear after a season. Gradually lighter or darker over time, color can give your room the flexibility you need to express the style you love.

LISTEN TO YOUR HEART
Don't be afraid of your favorite color. If it makes you feel good when you use it in a room, then use it on your floor, the largest area.

MAKE WAY FOR CHOCOLATE
Once a strong trend, but now a classic, it's time to introduce your floors to chocolate. It's as powerful as black, but much more versatile. Chocolate is rich, silky and psychologically appetizing - and it comes in numerous shades. Keep chocolate around for good, but swap out accent colors aqua, pink, maroon, magenta, bright orange, spa blue when you're ready for a change.

CLASSIC RED
Red is always a classic. The significant question with red is what color influences it. Chinese red--which is highly popular today--is a rich red-orange combination. Watch for Venetian red--a red with blue influence--to emerge.

RICH GREENS

We continue to see rich variations of green. This time, however, think of peacock feathers and all their saturated color. Yellow-based greens will reamin popular and blue-based greens are coming on strong. Representing two extremes, we're seeing neutral greens serve a subtle and sophisticated backdrop and shocking, toxic greens made up of equal parts green and yellow make a bold impact. Greens are staying strong as environmental awareness and intrest in eco-friendly products reach new heights.

NEW AND NATURAL ORANGE
New oranges remain strong in the home, making their way to upholstery, drapery, and even appliances. Most of these colors provide a muddied or burnished look that suggests a natural aging process. These tones provide a patina of authenticity that complements strong trends in home decor.

AMERICA'S FAVORITE COLOR
Navy and true blue remain important and will become more diverse, influencing purples and greens. Soft shades of aqua--the water colors that have performed so strongly in recent years--continue to be a mainstay. You'll also see unusual combinations as blue-greens are paired with rich browns, yellow-greens, and vivid red-oranges.

Trend Watch

TRENDS FOR YOUR FLOOR
CARPET COUTURE
We're seeing a definite trend toward fashion in carpet. Textures, different types of yarn systems, different colorations, patterns, tone-on-tone prints, looped carpet, tip shears anything that has interest or fashion seems to be very accepted.

HARDWOOD EVOLUTION
Hardwood is moving more toward distressed planks, planks in wider widths, and exotic woods. Its no longer just plain maple or oak. We're seeing more mahogany, cherry, teak, and walnut. Also, mixing woods is becoming increasingly popular.

TILE RE-SIZED
Size variations are popular with tile these days. From tiny tiles for mosaic applications to large, rather sheet-like squares of ceramic.

TRENDS TO CONSIDER
PLEASE THE EYES
Texture is THE big story in carpet and home furnishings these days. Add visual interest with loop or pattern. Pick a carpet that complements your favorite piece of furniture and go from there to make a personal design statement.

LAYER UP
Interior designers agree that every home has a place for an area rug. Layering in home decor is as fashionable as layering clothing. Don't hesitate to add color and warmth by adding a rug to hardwood, ceramic or even carpeting.

A FAVORITE FLOOR
There's no denying the crisp, cool beauty of ceramic, porcelain and stone. Tile is often the hands-down favorite flooring choice — formal or casual, dressed up or down, dazzlingly decorative or stunningly simple.

WORK WITH WOOD
While finely finished oak flooring may be the quintessential hardwood for the Americas don't hesitate to experiment with wider width or distressed planks and some exciting new exotics.

EASY & IN-STYLE
Designers recommend laminate for an upscale look without an upscale cost. Homeowners can make a house a home, stick to a budget AND get a warm wood look. Bring durability, quality and style home with laminate.

Ready to shop for a new floor?

Think about room logistics:
How do you use the room most?
What types of activities are common in this room?
What are the room's lighting sources?
What is the size of the room?
Does the room flow into others or stand alone?

Think about existing or intended aesthetic:
How do you want to feel when you're in this room?
What types of furnishings do you have?
What's the style of the room? Traditional? Contemporary? Rustic?
What's the feel of the room? Casual? Formal? Somewhere in between?

Consider risk factors for the room:
Will people have food in this room?
Will kids play in this room?
Will kids play with their food in this room?
Does the room directly open up to the outside?
Do you have indoor pets?

Understand expectations for the room:
Is your new flooring purchase motivated by style or practical reasons?
Are you living with this new flooring or planning to sell your home?
What's the first thing you want to notice when you enter the room?

The better prepared you are to answer these questions, the easier it will be to select the best flooring for your home.

Smart Surfaces

KIND ON THE EARS
Carpet isn't just a stylish choice, it's a sound one. More than just soft to the touch it means soft acoustics great for homes with children or grandchildren, or aging parents.

ALLERGEN CATCHER
Living with asthma or allergies? Don't shut the door on carpet. Unlike hard surfaces known for dust bunnies, carpet fibers can trap allergens and hold them until you remove them with a strong vacuum.

NO-PROBLEM REPAIRS
If one tile breaks, its easy to pop it out and replace it. If water spills, even a lot of it, no problem there, either. Plus, with a dark grout sealed to repel soil and stains, maintenance is a breeze.

AGE TO PERFECTION
Bring the warmth of wood into any room especially your kitchen. Hardwood floors stand up to daily spills with just a damp mop and become more handsome with more wear. It can make the most popular room in the house also the coziest.
